Codex Skin for Windows: What Works, What Does Not
Windows support is not a mirror of macOS. Native colors work, the upstream background flow supports install and restore, but user-image customization is not yet at parity.

Quick answer
On Windows, you can change native Codex colors and fonts today. A background skin depends on the upstream Dream Skin flow, which supports install, start, verify and restore but does not yet offer macOS-level user-image customization. Preview the composition in the browser first, then follow the Windows-specific upstream instructions.

Windows platform guide
Do not promise a one-click install.
The Windows upstream flow is useful, but it is not the same product as the macOS Customize entry. It can install, start, verify and restore a skin; user-selected images are not yet at parity. Saying otherwise creates a support problem and a trust problem.
The safe sequence is still the same: preview the composition in the browser, export the recipe, use the Windows-specific upstream entry, then verify a task and a diff. If the app updates and the layer breaks, restore first and re-check compatibility.
How it works
The decisions that actually change the result
- 01
Preview in the browser
The studio runs on Windows browsers. Frame the image and test Home, Task and Diff before touching the app.
- 02
Start with native colors
If colors and fonts are enough, use the native appearance settings. No engine, no extra process, no restore risk.
- 03
Review the Windows upstream flow
Read the current windows/SKILL.md and scripts. Do not run an unknown installer or a pack that carries shell commands.
- 04
Verify and restore
Check the app version, run the verification step, then practice the restore before you customize further.

Keep the uploaded composition. Remove small icons, text and hard-edged objects from the center. Reduce contrast behind the reading area, preserve edge texture, return a 16:9 desktop backdrop, no logos.Which path fits

Next step
Preview first, install second.
Use the free studio on Windows, export a reviewable recipe, and only then follow the upstream Windows path.
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Can I use a Codex skin on Windows?
You can change native colors and fonts today. A background skin depends on the upstream Windows flow, which supports install, start, verify and restore but does not yet offer the same user-image customization as macOS.
Is there a Windows one-click installer?
Do not trust that claim. The upstream Windows flow is a scripted install and verification path, not a magic one-click theme. Read the current instructions for your version.
Will a skin survive a Codex update on Windows?
Native colors usually persist. A background layer may break when the app's rendering changes. Restore first, then check the upstream compatibility notes before reinstalling.
Does CodexSkin modify app.asar on Windows?
No. The project does not modify the official app package, code signature, WindowsApps directory, API keys or provider settings. A skin is appearance data, not a patched binary.
Can I preview a Windows skin before installing?
Yes. The browser studio runs on Windows and previews the same composition and contrast checks. Use it before you run any local script.
What should I do if the app will not start after a skin?
Run the upstream restore entry, then launch Codex normally. If that fails, follow the platform recovery notes and report the exact app version and error without sharing private content.
